The matriarch, herself, is caught between leading humanity against the genocidal, galactic threat of the Turboii and the laws that protect primitive worlds from extrasolar depredation. Two potential remedies to humanity’s dire situation lie on the backwater world of Dianis, but Achelous -- the person most able to unlock them -- has disappeared. Desperate to find allies in her quest to enlist Dianis in the war, the matriarch travels to the planet to seek answers of how to defeat the Turboii and still honor ULUP – the Universal Law of Unclaimed Planets.
On Dianis, the matriarch meets three women -- provincials -- who in their different roles can either help or hinder her cause and thus shape the fate of humanity. The irony being the safety of the remaining twenty billion humans in the galaxy depend on the actions of the few on a world far removed from the front. Many are dying in the war to hold the Turboii back.
One of the women whom the matriarch meets is Marisa, the true leading character of the chronicles. Unaware of the cosmic turmoil that surrounds her lover -- Achelous -- Marisa, a trader princess, struggles to learn Achelous's secrets as he attempts to keep her from the truth. Achelous is not the simple Dianis trader he pretends to be, but an undercover agent for a secret monitoring organization, the IDB, from a society hundreds of years in advance of her own. Marisa loves Achelous, her son, and her country, but can she unravel the mystery of Achelous in time to save him from Paleowright retribution?
